CasKids, a beneficiary of the Whitehorse Community Chest, is an auxiliary of the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne. It was founded in 1967 by community members who were drawn together by their experiences with the Royal Children's Hospital. Some had children who were seriously ill, and there were those who lost their children to life threatening illnesses.
CasKids helps the Young People's Health Service (YPHS) by purchasing and donating much needed supplies.
A Nurse Practitioner and Coordinator of the YPHS explains how support from CasKids has made a difference in the lives of young people needing help.
"Thank you for your good wishes and ongoing support for the Young People's health Service. We appreciate the contributions made by CasKids and the differences they make to the lives of the young people we work with. I would like to share with the CasKids Auxiliary an example of appreciation from a young man, recently seen at the clinic.
David, a nineteen year old living on the street and disengaged from his family for the past six months, attended the clinic with complex health issues. He expressed concern about his personal hygiene and not being able to afford the basic necessities to care for himself and was clearly distressed about his situation. Upon receiving his CasKids present, David became emotional and explained that he felt that ‘people do care' and that he ‘was not alone in the world'.
"We feel it is important to share this recent experience with CasKids, as working directly with homeless youth we have the benefit of observing the impact of the Auxiliary's hard work."
