The Vermont Cancer Research Group is an incorporated body consisting of approximately 40 women who live in Vermont and surrounding suburbs and who are dedicated to the raising of funds for cancer research.
All members are volunteers who donate their time and materials for fundraising so that every dollar received is given directly and specifically for cancer research. A unique feature of the group is that through its contacts, it identifies areas of need and provides funds directly for purchase of specific equipment needed by approved reesearchers.
Money is raised through street stalls, lunches, the Whitehorse Community Chest and special efforts. They are also supported by the City of Whitehorse.
Each year the group raises between $15,000 and $20,000 for distribution to research departments of Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, The Royal Children's Hospital, St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, Alfred Hospital, Women's Cancer Centre amongst others.
Since its inception in 1980 the group has donated at least $310,000 to cancer research.
